Facial neuropathy (or Bell’s palsy) is one of the most common mononeuropathies with an incidence of about 7–40 people per 100,000 population per year. This review presents important aspects of clinical, laboratory, neurophysiological and neuroimaging diagnostics of the facial nerve damage at various stages of the disease. Instrumental diagnostics of the character and severity of facial nerve damage at the early stage of Bell’s palsy is still topical. The diagnostic significance of TMS, multiparametric MRI and high-resolution ultrasound in determining the prognosis of the course and outcomes of facial nerve damage requires further study, which remains a priority of scientific research at the Children’s Scientific and Pediatric Research and Clinical Center for Infectious Diseases of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia.

Key words: facial neuropathy, Bell’s palsy, facial nerve, electroneuromyography, transcranial magnetic stimulation.
