The article gives a detailed analysis of the history of the intrathoracic lymph nodes study. This issue is considered in two aspects ― the history of «mapping» of the lymph nodes and the evolution of views on the lymphatic dissection. These ways of studying the issue, despite the similar objectives, developed in parallel in different countries. Only in recent decades there appeared the opportunity to combine all of the data (terms, volume and technique of lymph node dissection) obtained in more than a hundred years. The great volume of the obtained information and the opportunity for all specialists to work together allow to develop and improve the technique of lymphatic dissection in lung cancer, which undoubtedly affects the epidemiological indicators of this location.

Key words: lung cancer, lymph node dissection, lymph node map, systematic lymph node dissection.
