Experience of combined surgical treatment of proliferative diabetic retinopathy complicated by cataract

One of the severe complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) is the development of diabetic retinopathy (DR). The development of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is often combined with lens opacities, which requires combined surgical intervention. The aim of the work was to evaluate the effectiveness of combined surgical intervention. 15 patients (18 eyes) with PDR complicated by cataract underwent the surgery. The opacities of the lens were graded by acoustic nuclear density using Schempflug-camera «Pentacam», and the severity of diabetes — using stereoscopic images obtained with fundus camera. According to the results of surgery, a satisfactory anatomical and functional result was obtained.
