  • Endoresection of choroidal melanoma after ruthenium-106 brachytherapy as an alternative to eye enucleation

     The study included 25 patients with choroidal melanoma (CM) who underwent endovitreal removal of tumor from 2011 to 2017. Out of 25 patients, there were 13 (52%) men and 12 (48%) women. The patients were from 31 to 80 y.o. (on average 54.4±12.0 y.o.). Endosection of CM in 23 patients was performed after brachytherapy of Ru-106, in 2 patients after gamma-knife. The mean follow-up was 23 months (range 4 to 71 months, standard deviation 17.4 months). None of the patients experienced tumor recurrences into the choroid, conjunctiva, or orbit. Within the indicated follow-up time, all eyes were preserved, metastases were detected in two patients. Secondary endoresection of large CM allows avoiding enucleation and even maintaining vision.
