Disability in case of Chiari malformation type 1 (CM1) isolated and/or associated with syringomyelia among the adult population of the Republic of Tatarstan for the period from 1998 to 2017 was analyzed. Disability was established in 14% of patients with CM1, including, with isolated CM1, at 7%, and when combined with syringomyelia, at 28%. Disability of the Ist and IInd groups was 33%. Regional fluctuations in the prevalence of CM1 and the proportions of patients with disabilities were identified. In the subgroup of patients with CM1 with the development of disability there were more men, CM1-associated syringomyelia, as well as workers engaged in hard physical work and moderate work. The dynamics of indicators of disability, as well as the direction of medical and social support and prevention of disability by CM1 were discussed.

Key words: Chiari malformation type 1, syringomyelia, disability, regional epidemiology.
