The objective was to study the structure and frequency of clinical manifestations of ocular ischemic syndrome in stenosing internal carotid artery (ICA) diseases and to analyze the background causes of their occurrence.

Material and methods. The study included 60 patients (34 men, 26 women) with ocular ischemic syndrome (OIS), who were observed at S. Fedorov Eye Microsurgery Institution and Federal Center for Cardiovascular Surgery in Khabarovsk.

All patients underwent standard and specialized ophthalmological examination. Assessment of blood flow in brachiocephalic vessels was performed by ultrasound scanning and spiral computed tomography.

Results. Among the examined patients with OIS, intermediate degree of stenosis of the ICA predominated ― 68.3% of cases, expressed degree of stenosis was significantly less frequent ― 23.4%, and small stenosis ― 8.3% of cases. The primary chronic type prevailed and amounted to 66.7%. According to the frequency of occurrence, the largest specific weight is occupied by ischemic optic neuro-opticopathy, both in acute and chronic type.

Conclusions. OIS is a multifactorial disease that requires a multidisciplinary approach of narrow specialists, timely diagnosis and treatment to preserve the vision and quality of life of patients.

Key words: ocular ischemic syndrome, internal carotid artery, stenosis.
