The issue of the disease caused by enteroviruses (EV) became especially topical in the recent years.
Objective ― to estimate the clinical and laboratory data of patients with meningitis caused by various serotypes of enteroviruses in children.
Material and methods. The article presents the data of research conducted in Yekaterinburg in 2004-2018. 662 children, aged 1 to 14 y.o., with a diagnosis of EVI, meningeal form, were under observation.
Results. The main differences in the clinical and laboratory picture of meningitis caused by various serotypes of enteroviruses were observed in the incidence of catarrhal syndrome, the severity of meningeal syndrome, rash and lesions of the mucous membrane, and intrathecal inflammation. The highest rates of pleocytosis were observed with type 71 EVI. With serous meningitis caused by type EV 71, we marked a low frequency of viral RNA isolation from cerebrospinal fluid (14%) by polymerase chain reaction.
Conclusions. The differences in the clinical picture and CSF cytology data in meningeal enterovirus infection are due to the variety of EV serovariants and their effect on the immune system.
Key words: children, meningitis, enterovirus infection.
