Boerhaave’s syndrome or spontaneous rupture of the esophagus is not a rare disease, but the vast majority of authors have a small number of observations. A high mortality rate with this pathology is noted both in the Russian Federation and abroad. The article presents in-house results of diagnosis and treatment of 45 patients with Boerhaave’s syndrome who have been treated in the thoracic departments of the cities of Kazan and Yaroslavl. Comparison between patient groups in these regions was made. The causes of late and incorrect diagnosis of spontaneous rupture of the esophagus were considered. The factors affecting mortality in patients with this pathology were evaluated. The measures have been proposed to reduce mortality in case of this disease.

Key words: spontaneous rupture of the esophagus, Boerhaave’s syndrome.
